¿How the California test is carried out?
To make the diagnosis, a small amount of milk (a tablespoon or about 2 ml) is taken from each breast and placed in a well. It is recommended to do it before milking and in the afternoon if it is milked twice a day.
Approximately the same amount of reagent as there is milk is then poured into the well and mixed by rotating movements for no more than 10 seconds. The reading must be done within 20 seconds if the reaction does not disappear.
¿How the results are interpreted?
Breast infection levels are classified into 4 levels depending on the severity of the infection. The wells are tilted to better appreciate the viscosity of the reaction.
-
no infection : There is no precipitate and therefore there is no infection.
-
Type 1 : Slight precipitation that disappears on shaking. This value must be compared from one breast to another: if both show some precipitation, it is not considered an infection. If only one breast has precipitation, it should be considered infected < of 750,000 cells.
-
Type 2 : Light precipitation with some lumpy filaments. If the well is moved for more than 20 seconds, the lumps tend to disappear. Does not form gel. Between 750,000 and 2,000,00 cells.
-
Type 3 : Rapid gel formation, egg white appearance. > 2,000,000 cells.
-
Type 4 : The formation of the gel is very fast and its appearance is like a fried egg, since a protuberance appears in the center of the mass that does not lose its shape despite the agitation.
