¿How to clean horse hooves?

  1. To start hoof cleaning, it is recommended to tie the animals in a quiet place with space for both. In this way, sudden movements or blows can be avoided. Calmness is essential for an optimal and complete sanitization process.
  2. Stand next to the leg you are going to check and run your hand gently, stroking the area as you lower your hand towards the hoof. Once you reach the fetlock, slightly pull it up so that the horse lifts its leg.
  3. Hold the hull wall tightly with one hand, while with the other you handle the tool you are going to use at that moment to clean.
  4. Use the tip of the scraper to carefully and gently loosen any stones or debris. Avoid sinking the tip into the sole or hoof, as this could cause pain. Make continuous movements until you can see the wall that forms the hull.
  5. Special attention should be paid to the area of the frog, a soft area that is free from the horseshoe and that facilitates the horse's grip on the ground and is exposed to blows, injuries and even serious diseases and ailments. If you detect a rotten smell when cleaning the area, it is very possible that there is an infection. It is recommended to notify the veterinarian and do an exhaustive control.

If the equine stirs when you clean or handle one of the hooves or if you see that the animal puts its weight on it so that you cannot perform the cleaning task, it can be an indicator of pain or discomfort. The appearance of the wall should be checked, looking for any crack, fissure or blow that should be watched.
It is recommended to use the part of the brush to rub the palm and leave it completely clean to proceed, later, to rinse with water.
