¿What is canine seborrhea?

It is a syndrome characterized by abnormal keratinization and desquamation of the epithelial surface of the skin, with visible and abundant scale formation. It may or may not be accompanied by abnormal activity of the sebaceous glands. It can also present with irritation and inflammation of the skin, with the final result of altering the normal balance of the epidermis.

TYPES OF SEBORRHEA IN DOGS:

In general, there are three forms of seborrhea in different degrees, which can coexist simultaneously in the same animal. They usually appear diffusely over the entire surface of the dog, although sometimes there are more intense local manifestations.

NAME FREQUENT IN...  CHARACTERISTICS OF THE PATHOLOGY
dry seborrhea

Doberman Pinscher, German Shepherd, Irish Setter and Schnauzer.

It occurs more frequently in early adulthood, with excessive scaling on the neck, trunk, back and rear thighs. Although the skin may initially appear dry and scaly, it feels greasy to the touch and usually emits a characteristic odor.

oily seborrhea

Cocker Spaniels, Springer Spaniels, and Basset Hounds.

Greasy, sometimes frankly oily, of the skin and hair, with scales and agglutination of the hairs. It usually produces an intense smell of rancid fat.

Seborrheic dermatitis

Cocker spaniel

It appears as a more severe variant of oily seborrhea, with inflamed, depilated skin areas, with frequent staphylococcal infection, hyperkeratinization and surrounded by an erythematous halo. It is located mainly in the external auditory canal, ventral part of the neck, belly, inguinal area and perineum.
